At KGK Genix, we believe in the power of growth, both as a team and as individuals. Our apprenticeship scheme is at the heart of this vision, giving young talents the opportunity to learn hands-on, develop essential skills, and explore their career paths. Apprenticeships in Essex and Herts are vital for providing opportunities close to home, and we’re committed to shaping fulfilling careers in print for the next generation. We’re incredibly proud of our apprentices, Ryan and Hayden, who bring enthusiasm, fun and a fresh perspective to our team. Here, they share their journey at KGK including advice for others considering this path.
Ryan joined KGK Genix after realising that traditional college life wasn’t the best fit for his learning style.
“I am a new Apprentice at KGK Genix. In my brief time here, I have been greeted by supportive and welcoming colleagues in Production and all other departments,” Ryan shares. “I have been assigned mentors, and they have really helped me get to grips with the basics, and I’ve been given a structure for learning how to use all the machines. This really helps me.”
With a hands-on approach, Ryan is eager to learn the processes and materials involved in operating the machinery. Although he’s not set on long-term plans, he’s fully focused on improving his skills each day as he navigates his career in print.
His advice for others considering an apprenticeship is simple: “Enjoy yourself, but work hard. Be yourself—no one will judge you for being you. Most importantly, be willing to learn and be open-minded. There are many ways to do something; just find a way that works for you.”
For Hayden, joining KGK Genix at just 16 years old was a significant step in his personal and professional development. Straight out of school, he quickly adapted to a work environment, learning not only technical skills but also valuable life skills in the print industry.
“I feel like I have grown up,” Hayden says. “With great influences around me and mentoring throughout my time here, I’m surrounded by a great team.”
In his year and three months with us, Hayden has mastered various techniques, from laminating and mounting to using the Zund, Summa, and Monti machines. “I enjoy cutting on the Zund, laminating, and stitching—all the different finishing techniques,” he notes.
What stands out most to him, however, is the supportive and friendly atmosphere at KGK Genix. “Everyone gets on so well, and it makes it so easy to come into work knowing you’re going to see your friends,” he adds. Workplace wellbeing is a priority here, creating a nurturing environment that supports learning and growth.
For Hayden, the advice to future apprentices is clear: “Be yourself, be open-minded, and trust those with experience. Push yourself every day. It was definitely the best decision I could have made after leaving school.”
Both Ryan and Hayden highlight the importance of mentorship, learning, and a positive environment in their journeys. Their stories reflect the values we uphold at KGK Genix—creating a workplace where every individual can thrive and make a meaningful impact. Our team is growing, and we’re excited to continue investing in young talent through our apprenticeship program, which not only builds skills but also fosters confidence and personal growth. With apprenticeships in Essex and Herts, we’re building a foundation for future experts in print.
Ryan and Hayden are prime examples of what an apprenticeship can offer: a pathway to hands-on experience, career development, and a sense of accomplishment in contributing to real projects. We’re incredibly proud of their progress and can’t wait to see all that they achieve as they continue their journey with us in their careers in print.
